The Importance Of Patience
Patience you must have, my young padawan.
Yoda is the epitome of patience and that’s why I chose to highlight one of his most famous quotes. But we don’t have to resort to (awesome) fictional characters to grasp the importance of patience.
My favorite definition of patience is that patience is “the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.”
I’m certainly not a patient person at times and I don’t know anyone that has a neverending supply of patience inside them. If being patient were easy, we wouldn’t have road rage or Twitter and we would all be in a zen-like state.
Displaying and having patience is extremely important though and patience is a virtue that’s revered from the dawn of humanity and in all of the human societies.
Research from 2019 conducted on 80,000 people across 76 countries showed that the richest countries in the world are also the ones that have the most patient inhabitants.
In the paper the authors point out: “Populations of European ancestry tend to be more patient than the world mean. Indeed, all of the 10 most patient countries in the world are either located in the neo-European, English-speaking world, or else in Western Europe, with the Scandinavian countries exhibiting particularly high levels of patience.”
Countries with higher levels of patience represent those where people tend to be more willing to sacrifice a smaller short-term reward for a larger reward in the longer-term.
“The more patient people are and the more they save, the more they can invest in equipment and education — and they become that much more productive and rich,” Armin Falk, German research economist says. He continues saying that “of all the influences investigated, patience had by far the biggest influence on per-capita income and is the decisive factor in why some countries are rich and others are comparatively poor.”
